Raffles Landing Site

Raffles Landing Site

As the name suggests, this is the spot Sir Stamford Raffles purportedly first set foot on when he landed in Singapore on the 28th of January 1819. The tall, majestic marble statue that you see behind us is actually a replica of the original black bronze statue (which can be found in front of the Victoria Memorial Hall) and it was erected in 1969 to celebrate 150 years of the founding of Singapore. At the bottom of the statue is a description of the Raffles’ contributions to Singapore, the acknowledgement that without his “genius and perception”, Singapore would not be the metropolis we are today. 200 years after that historical landing, Raffles remains highly celebrated and lauded as the founder of modern Singapore. This spot continues to be a popular spot for tourist as they take a walk along the Singapore River.
